255.  John Cannon, freedman, 70 years old.  Lives on Mr. John Cannon’s place about 2 miles below Effingham.  Is unable to work, perfectly helpless.  Has walked the entire distance, 22 miles, taking about a week on the journey. Issued for ten days.

 

256.  Abram Ellis, freed boy, is 13 years old, orphan.  Used to belong to Dr. Wesley Ellis of North Carolina.  Cannot find anyone willing to employ or help him.  Issued for ten days.

 

August 28

 

257.  Jane Bass, white widow, 38 yrs. old.  Has three children under ten.  Lives in Chesterfield Dist. about 10 miles west of the Court House on road running from Camden to Cheraw on Hannah Brown’s place.  Has no crop planted.  Has 9 or 10 chickens, no other stock.  Is recommended by W. L. J. Reid of Cheraw {& James P. Harrall.}  Issued for five days.

 

258.  Flora Bass, white widow, 50 years old.  Lives by herself in Chesterfield, no children.  Jane above mentioned is her niece by marriage.  Lives on land of Reuben Hoy about one mile from Jane Bass.  Has no crop, no stock at all.  Is recommended by same as above.  Issued for five days.

 

259.  Elizabeth Shell, white widow, 26 years old. Has one child under 10.  Lives near above Jane Bass on Reuben Hoy’s place.  Has no land, no crop, Has some 4 or 5 chickens. Is recommended as above.  Issued for five days.

 

260.  Ann Eliza Wilkes, white widow 16 years old, but does not look to be over 14.  Says she was married when ten years of age.  Has never had a child.  Lives with her mother, Martha McQuaig, about 8 miles from Cheraw on Plank road leading to Wadesborough, on William Lee’s land.  Has no crop growing, no garden; has a few chickens, no other stock.  Is recommended as honest & deserving, by Hugh Craig Senr., Ordinary of Chesd. Dist. & by Jos. P. Harrell.  Issued for five days to both.

 

261.  Nancy E. Butts, white, 38 years old.  Has husband named Mathiew, an invalid.  Has one child under 10.  Lives about three miles from Chesterfield Court House on Plank road from Cheraw to Wadesborough about two miles from above mentioned Ann Wilkes, on land of William Lee, Senior.  Has no crop or garden has a few chickens no other stock.  Is recommended by Hugh Craig Sen, Ordy. of C.D. and H. Craig Jr. Clk.  Issued to all for five days.

 

262.  Abram Woods, freedman, is 35 years old, badly deformed in the legs.  Is unable to do any work.  Lives on Asa Garland’s [?] place 12 miles distant, about 2 miles from Lydia in Darlington Dist.  Has a note from Garland who states he is supporting four other grown freedmen & women besides six children all of whom are helpless.  Issed for five days.  See case 11, this Book.

 

August 29

 

263.  Arnold Lide, freedman, 50 years old.  Helpless from scrofula for past ten years.  Lives on Mrs. Ann Backus place three miles distant on Springville road.  Is certified to by Doctor R. L. Hart of Darlington.  Issued for five days.

 

264.  Jenny Moody, white widow, 38 years old.  Has three children under six.  Lives with her mother Patsy Spence about 5 miles from Darlington Court House on Cashaway Ferry road on Frank Middleton’s land.  Has about one acre in cotton, 2 acre in potatoes, one sow & seven pigs, a dozen hens & some fifteen small chickens.  Is recommended by J. W. Fountain.  Issued for all for five days.

 

265.  Effie Poston, white widow, 47 years old.  Has no children.  Lives with her mother Elizabeth Woodard about 7 miles from Chesterfield Court House on road from that place to Camden.  The mother owns about 15 acres, but only 5 acres in corn and 3/4 acre in potatoes.  Has a dozen chickens no other stock.  Is recommended by James P. Harrall & Geo. W. McIver.  Her sister in law, Mary Woodard lives near by with four children under eight.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued to Effie & her mother for five days.

 

266. Francis Wallace, white widow.  62 years old.  Has two children, one daughter Francis 24 years & one, Catherine 22 years, married to Andrew Sellers all living with her, five miles from Chesterfield Court House on Wadesborough Road.  Has 168 acres, 3 acres in cotton, 10 acres in corn.  Has one horse, one cow, one hog, half dozen chickens.  Is recommended by W. L. J. Reid of Cheraw.  Has free ticket on R. R.   Issued for self only, for five days.

 

267.  Rachel Campbell, white widow, 35 years old.  Has six children under 14.  Lives with her mother in law Mary Campbell, on Thomas Jones land. 2 acres in cotton, 8 acres in corn.  Has one ox, one sow & three pigs, 9 chickens.  Lives about 5 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Cheraw road. Is recommended by one Isaac Smith.  Is directed to bring other reference.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued to all for five days.

 

268.  Lucretia Johnson, white widow, 37 years old.  Has two children under 14.  Lives about 6 miles distant on Camden road, on R. Beasley’s turpentine farm.  Has no garden, or crop, no stock of any kind.  No means of living except by spinning.  Her father, Ezekial Neal, lives quite close to her.  He has some cotton, corn & potatoes.  He has one ox, 8 hogs, some chickens.  Ann Jordan his other daughter lives with him, no children. A brother named James Neal lives one mile distant and has a crop.  Her other sister Louisa Morrill, Case 68, lives about a mile off.  Lucretia is recommended by R. Beasley & Z. Hollimon.  Issued for herself & two children for five days.

 

269. Elizabeth Davis, white widow, 46 years old.  Has three children.  One son Andrew, 25 years old, married & living in Sumter.  One daughter Martha 17 & one, Elizabeth, 14, living with her.  Lives on Charles Johnson’s place about half mile from above last mentioned place.  Has a garden or crop, no stock of any kind.  Oldest daughter is greatly afflicted. Has some brothers and sisters living in Sumter.  Is recommended by R. Beasley, Z. Hollimon, C. W. Johnson.  Issued for herself and two daughters for five days.

 

August 30

 

270.  Dolly Green, freedwoman, 40 years old. {& Dolly Godfrey, 86 years old, supported by Mr. Moore, is represented by him to be helpless.  Issued for ten days.}   Has five children under 10, husband dead.  Lives on place of W. W. Moore Magistrate, 18 miles distant on direct road leading from Mar’s Bluff on Pee Dee River to DuBose Bridge on Lynch’s Creek six miles from Du Bose Bridge.  Is afflicted with falling of the womb.  Is certified to and recommended by Mr. Moore.  Issued for ten days. 

 

271.  Nancy Skeen, white, 48 years old.  Has been blind all her life.  Lives with Abel Register mentioned in Case 237, this Book.  Is recommended by Thos. Atkinson ex-magistrate. J. M. Harrell, & B. Clements.  Issued for only two days, as Register her uncle is supposed to be able to support her..

 

272. Margaret J. Moore, white widow, 30 years old.  Has two children under 7.  Is a cousin of Hester Wilson, Case 16.  Lives with her father Mathew Oates on Lake Swamp on his land, con Camden road 13 miles distant, near to Hester Wilson her cousin. Father has quite a crop of corn, cotton &c.  Has one horse, one cow, one ox, some hogs & chickens.  Margaret is afflicted with rheumatism.  Is recommended by Thos. Atkinson, Ex-magistrate.  Issued for three days.

 

273.  Eleanor Ingraham, white widow, 44 years old.  Five children, one daughter Docinda 20 years, one son Theophilus , 14 years, rest younger. Theophilus works on the place.  She has over a hundred acres.  Has some corn planted, no cotton, very few potatoes. Has 10 pigs and three hogs, few chickens.  Lives about 7 miles from Cheraw on old Camden road.  Is recommended by W. L. T. Prince, W. Godfrey.  John F. Matheson of Cheraw.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for all for five days.

 

September 1

 

274. Charles Zimmerman, freedman, 67 years old.  Paralytic.  Lives on plantation called Jerks’ Bay about nine miles distant on Camden road, south west from this place.  Is perfectly helpless.  Has been supported by John W. Zimmerman, son of the Doctor, who formerly owned Charles.  Mr. Zimmerman has brought him up in his buggy to obtain help.  Issued for ten days.

 

275. Winne Dargan, freedwoman, 40 years old.  Lives on Edw. Capers place, 7 miles distant, on Sumter road.  Is too feeble to work and gets no share in crop.  Issued for ten days.

 

September 3

 

276.  Daniel Brown, white, 65 years old. Lives in Chesterfield half a mile from Black Creek near District line of Darlington on road running from Seagriss upper mill to Rocky ford.  House was burnt down last spring.  Has a wife named Maria.  Eight children.  Three sons Elijah, John Henry and Wesley all grown.  Wesley lives with him.  Elijah & John live near by.  Four grown daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth Lavinia, Mary, all married but Lavinia who lives in North Carolina with her married sister Sarah.  Mary married John James and Elizabeth married Duncan Gainey.  Has about 250 acres, only 30 acres in corn, 1 acre in potatoes, no other crop.  Has 2 milch cows, 2 heifers, 1 ox, 9 or 10 head of hogs, a few chickens.  His youngest son living with him, Wesley, has 1 ox, 2 cows, & 2 calves.  John has 12 or 14 head of cattle.  Elijah has but 4 or 5.  Mary lives about a mile from him has 1 cow & calf.  Elizabeth  he says has nothing.  See Case 55 this Book.  Rations refused though recommended by J. C. Newman, B. W. Outlaw, Joseph Hall, Alex. Williams, Elijah Brown, William King.

 

277.  Mary E. Jenkins, white widow, 29 years old, did live in Chesterfield district close to North Carolina line on Camden & Charlotte road on Jacob Mangram’s [?] land.  Left there on Aug. 20th is trying to get to Augusta, Georgia, to find work in a factory.  Has supported herself by spinning,  sewing, etc.  Had no crop, no means of getting through the winter.  Got as far as Florence on a free Railroad ticket passing her to Kingsville but had to return here to get something to eat.  Is recommended by G. W. Carter, John Griffin & others.  Has three children under seven.  Issued for ten days to all.

 

278.  Cassy Ann Chapman, white widow, 40 years old.  Has three children under 10 years.  Lives on Pee Dee River on Frank Williamson’s land, 10 miles distant between Georgetown road & River Swamp, North  East from Darlington Court House.  Has about 1/4 acre in corn.  Has one hog, a few chickens.  Her mother Catherine Deese lives with her, is helpless.  Is recommended by E. Byrd, J. H. Normand, Geo. A. Norwood.  Issued for herself & children for five (5) days.

 

279.  Samuel Beasley, freedman, 36 years old. Is afflicted  with rheumatism. Cannot work.  Wife’s name Easter, five small children.  Lives near Boggy Swamp Church, 17 miles distant on Miles P. Barefoot’s place.  His wife has about 2 acres of corn & 1 of potatoes, 1 hog, 4 chickens. Is recommended as extremely needy by F. D. Chapman, John D. Flowers, M. Beasley & others.  Issued for seven days to all.

 

September 4

 

280.  Ruth McLean, white widow, 57 years old.  Has two children under five years.  Lives 8 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Charleston road on Estate of Moses McLean no relative of her husbands.  Has been living there since January 1866. Has a very small garden a few chickens, no other stock.  Has four brothers, Levi, Warren, Thomas & Benjamin Cassady, all married men with large families living near hers.  They have crops growing, but poor.  Ruth is recommended by F. Turner, J T. Drake, C. A. Brock [?], J. H. Gooch, James P. Harrall.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for self & two children for five days.

 

281.  Celia Brown, white widow, 26 years old.  Has two children under 5 years.  Lives 10 miles from Chesterfield Court House on road to Cheraw on her father in law Jesse Brown’s place, 57 years old. Land does not belong to them. She does not know to whom it belongs.  Jesse Brown has been living there for over six years.  Has about 20 acres cultivated, in corn, a little cotton & potatoes, a few hogs & chickens, 1 ox.   Celia is recommended by F. Turner & James J. Powell.  Has a free ticket on R. R.  Issued to self & children for five days.

 

282.  Elizabeth Bass, white widow, 22 years old.  One child 2 2 years old.  Lives about 8 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Camden road, on Levi Cassady’s place, brother of above mentioned Ruth McLean.  Has a small garden, no crop, no stock of any kind.  Levi has about 200 acres, about 20 acres in corn, no cotton, one horse, 1 ox, 3 cows, some hogs and chickens.  Has a wife Maria, and one daughter. Elizabeth is no relative to any of the foregoing people.  Is recommended by F. Turner, J. T. Drake, C. A. Brock, J. H. Gooch, & James P. Harrall.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for herself & one child for five days.

 

283.  Mary Odom, white, 19 years old.  Has a mother Rody, living with her on her cousin Morgan Odom’s land, married man with no family. He has over 50 acres.  Some 20 acres in corn, little cotton & potatoes.  3 cows, 1 ox, 1 horse, few hogs & chickens. This place is about 9 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Camden road.  Mary Odom is recommended by same parties as above. Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for Mary & mother for five days.

 

284.  Laura Cassady, white, 20 years old. Husband James, lost a leg.  Not able to do much.  Lives about 9 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Camden road, on Mrs. Mary Woodward’s place.  Has a small garden, no crop, a few chickens, no other stock.  Is recommended by same parties as above.  Has free ticket on Railroad.  Has one child about 2 years old.  Issued for herself and child for five days.

 

September 5

 

285.  Mark Long, freedman, 65 years old.  Lives in Cheraw nearly totally blind and partially paralyzed on Mr. Wm. Godfreys land.  Has a wife named Harriet Capers Pritchard 60 years old, living with him.  Is recommended by W. L. T. Prince & W. C. Long. Issued for ten days to each.  Rations sent up by son Frank Capers, working in Darlington at carpenter work, married man with family.

 

September 6

 

286.  Elizabeth Philips, white widow, 27 years old.  No children of her own. Has a little cousin under 10, named Queen Ann Harrall, and one niece Martha Jenkins under 6 years for both of whom she has to provide being orphan children.  Lives about 18 miles from Chesterfield Court House on old Tory Road near White plains on her brothers land, named Stephen Moss, who lives in North Carolina.  Has no crop growing.  Has a small garden.  Has no stock of any kind. Is recommended by J. P. Harrall, Commissioner of poor.  Issued for ten days.

 

287.  Mary Ann Jane Hall, white widow, 30 years old.  Has four children.  One son William Burton Tailor 16 years old, born before marriage, Susannah Hall, 11 years old, rest under 10 years.  Lives near above mentioned place, called Jefferson Beat on land of Fletcher Mangans. Has about 20 acres in corn, peas etc.  Little cotton.  Son William works the place.  One cow & two yearlings. Her mother, Susannah Taylor and her sisters Susannah, Eleanor & Francis live on same place near by.  Mother has one ox, one cow & yearling.  Two hogs, has no crop growing.  Mary is recommended by J. P. Harrall as above.  Issued for ten days.

 

288.  Dick McCown, freedman, 70 years old, suffering from dropsy & rheumatism.  Lives on James McCown’s place near Florence, S. C.  Certified to by James McCown.  Issued for ten days.

 

289.  William Dority, white, 64 years old.  Has a wife named Martha, 36 years old.  Has three children under 7 years.  Lives on Lake Swamp 12 miles distant, on land belonging to Allan Doolin.  Has no crop, Has about a dozen chickens, no other stock.  Has been working lately at Wm. Reynolds, pulling fodder.  Is recommended by Henry E. P. Sanders, A. J. Pierce, W. C. Long & J. L. Cooper.  Issued for all for five days.

 

September 7

 

290.  Jime Bradley, freedman, 70 years old.  Blind.  Lives with Tony, freedman, near Kingstree, S. C.  Tony has been supporting him though no relation of his.  Jime has children grown but they do nothing for him.  Issued for ten days.

 

291.  Hester & Mary, colored children, belonging to Solomon Reynolds, freedman, confined under charge of murder.  Issued for five days.

 

292.  Harry Campbell, freedman, 40 years old. Has a wife and five children.  Wife cooks for Paul Cervantes.  Lives on Robt. Campbell’s place 8 miles distant on Timmonsville road.  Is badly crippled and hardly able to work.  Issued to himself for ten days.

 

293.  Darcas Zimmerman, freedwoman, 45 years old.  Is afflicted with white swelling, has one daughter named Kissey who has lost her right arm just below the elbow. Lives at same place with Charles, Case 274 this Book, recommended by W. E. Zimmerman.  Issued for five days to both.

 

294. Hiram Lunsford, white, 57 years old.  Lives on place of Richard Powell in Chesterfield district on Thompson Creek about 3 miles from Cheraw on Camden road.  Has a good garden, no stock of any kind.  Has five children, one son Edmond, grown.  One daughter Frances grown.  William 14 years, Enoch & Simeon under 10 years.  Hiram & his two sons Edmond & William are working at Mars Bluff ditching.  Is recommended by J. P. Harrall, E. M. Wells, W. L. J. Prince and others.  Issued to Frances, see Case 248, and her two brothers Simeon & Enoch for five (5) days.

 

September 12

 

295.  Mary Deese, white widow, 34 years old.  Has five children, one son John 15 years, rest under 10.  John works here & there for a pittance. Lives about 5 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Camden road, on Edward Gallidge’s place.  Has no crop.  Has a small garden, no stock of any kind.  Is recommended by J. P. Harrall, W. L. J. Reid, W. B. Smith etc.  Has free ticket on R. R. Issued to herself and four children for five days.

 

296.  Paul Keith, freedboy, orphan, nine years old.  Is now supported by John Clannahan freedman who married the boy’s aunt.  Lives on Thomas Keith’s place near Timmonsville.  Issued for five days.

 

September 13

 

297.  Jane Wilkinson, white widow, 43 years old.  Has one child under ten, and two of her sisters orphan children dependent on her.  Lives on New man Swamp 18 miles distant on Widow Parnells place on road running from Mars Bluff to Camden.  Has no crop.  Has a small garden & potato patch.  Has four hogs, no other stock.  Is recommended by W. W. Moore, Magistrate.  Issued for seven (7) days to all.

 

September 14

 

298.  David Green, freedman, 50 yeas old.  Is suffering from pulmonary consumption, and not able to work.  Has a wife, Darkas:  they live near the Stockade in Florence.  Issued to himself and wife for five days.

 

299.  Susannah Strickling, white widow, 34 years old, five small children under 10 years.  Lives on Boggy Gully 26 miles distant, on Sparrow Swamp road on Stephen Andrews land.  Has no crop.  Has a small garden and potato patch.  Has a few chickens.  Is recommended by Thos. Atkinson, E. Galloway, ex-magistrate.  Issued for five days.

 

300.  Mary Elizabeth Hutchison, white widow, 37 years old.  Seven children. One daughter Mary 16.  A son James 11 years, rest under ten.  Lives between Sparrow Swamp and Lake Swamp six miles from Timmonsville in Carter settlement on Timmonsville road.  Lives on her father James Smith’s place. Father has one cow, four hogs, some chickens, and a small crop.  Mothers name Frances.  Mary is recommended by E. Galloway, ex-magistrate.  Issued for five days.

 

September 15

 

301.  Rebecca McCall, freedwoman, 75 years old.  Is perfectly helpless from rheumatism. Lives with her daughter Margaret in Darlington.  Issued for five days.

 

September 17

 

302.  Eveline McGowan, white widow, 27 years old.  Has two children under ten.  Lives on R. Beasley’s place.  Has no crop or garden.  Been living there about one month.  Did live with her father Isaac Miller on John New’s place over Louders’ lake.  The father now lives with Caroline Hicks as man & wife, though not married, see Case 210 this book.  Beasley’s turpentine still where Eveline lives is about four miles distant on Camden road.  Is recommended by R. Beasley & G. Hollimon.  Issued for five days to herself & two children.

 

303.  Rebecca Johnson, white widow, 66 years old.  Lives in Chesterfield Dist. on Bear Creek 6 miles from Court House on Mr. Archie McMillan’s place.  Has no crop, no garden.  Has two grown sons married. One married daughter not living with her.  Has lost her right hand.  Is recommended by J. P. Harrall & E. M. Wells. Issued for ten (10) days.

 

September 18

 

304.  Moses Nettles, freedman, 90 years old.  Lives on Jeffers Creek at Mrs. Malvina Howe’s place about 10 miles distant, 3 miles south of Florence hear the N. E. R. R.  Is recommended by A. McLaughlin. Issued for ten (10) days.

 

305.  Mary Jane Cross, white, single, 17 years old.  Has two sisters 12 & 10 respectively and one little brother about 9.  Lives on road running from Camden to Cheraw about 14 miles from Cheraw on Mr. Wm. Cross’ land. He is her uncle.  He rents about 16 acres land from Charles David Boone.  He has a poor crop.  Has one ox, one sow & a few pigs, about a dozen chickens.  Mary has a few chickens.  Is recommended by F. Turner, Jas. P. Harrall. Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for three days to herself, sisters & brother.

 

September 21

 

306.  Daphne Wildes, freedwoman, 80 years old.  Blind in one eye.  Lives on Sam Wildes place 3 miles distant on Sparrow Swamp road.  Issued for ten (10) days.

 

307.  Mary Zimmerman, freedwoman, 45 years old.  Is an invalid.  Lives on Dr. Zimmerman’s place, see Case 274.  Issued for ten days.

 

September 29

 

308.  Will Cockfield, freedman, 80 years old.  Very feeble. Has a wife Minda about as old.  Lives on Mr. Ralston Singletary’s place 10 miles from Effingham in Williamsburg.  Issued for two days.
