Q-1-2.  Mortgage.   Feb. 7, 1848.  To secure his debt of $610, Charles P. Carter conveys to E. A. Law, commissioner in equity, two Negro slaves:  Lacey and her infant child Ervin, together with the increase of the female.  Conveyance is void if Carter pays his debt.  Wit.  Blaney Parnell.  Pr. Q-2-3. Mortgage.  Feb. 7, 1848.  To secure his debt of $680, John F. Ervin conveys Negro slave Elbert to E. A. Law, commissioner in equity.  Conveyance is void if Ervin pays his debt.  Wit. C. P. Carter, W. A. Ervin.  Pr. Mar. 7, 1848.  Rec. Mar. 7, 1848.

 

Q-12-13.  Mortgage.  Feb. 7, 1848.  To secure his debt of $880, David Reese Durant conveys a negro slave Gabriel, aged about 35 years, to E. A. Law, commissioner of equity.  Conveyance is void if Ervin pays his debt.  Wit. Charles P. Carter.  Pr. Apr. 3, 1848.  Rec. Apr. 3, 1848.

 

Q-13-14.  Mortgage.  Feb. 7, 1848.  To secure his debt of $750, James J. Carter conveys to E. Augustus Law, commissioner in equity, three slaves:  Lydia, aged about 50, Silvey, aged about 17, and Maria, aged about 10, with their increase.  Conveyance is void if Carter pays his debt.  Wit. John Whittington. Pr. Apr. 3, 1848.  Rec. Apr. 3, 1848.

 

Q-14-15.  Mortgage.  Feb. 7, 1848.  To secure his debt of $109, A. N. Stuckey conveys to E. A. Law, commissioner in equity, a Negro slave Phebe, with her future increase.  Conveyance is void if Stuckey pays his debt.  Wit. W. H. Wingate.  Pr. Mar. 9, 1848.  Rec. Apr. 3, 1848.

 

Q-15-16.  Mortgage. Feb. 7, 1848.  To secure his debt of $610, Brittian [also Britton] Harris conveys to E. A. Law, commissioner in equity, a negro slave named Laney, aged about 16 years, with her increase.  Conveyance is void if Harris pays his debt.  Wit. J. H. Huggins, E[rvin]. B. Brunson.  Pr. Q-16-17.  Deed of Gift.  Nov. 22, 1847. To make equivalent with those children already married and left home, Stephen Donald conveys property, including slaves, to his six single daughters.  To Clary Donald, a negro boy Ben and other property; to Catharine Donald, a negro woman Lettie [?] and other property; to Sarah Donald, a negro boy Cesar and other property; to Tabitha Donald, a negro girl Harriet and other property; to Effa Matilda Donald, a negro boy Sam and other property; to Elizabeth Lavina Donald, a negro girl Emmit and other property.  Wit. Q-36-37.  Mortgage.  Apr. 24, 1848. To secure a debt of $669, Josiah M. Crosswell conveys to E.A. Law, commissioner in equity, negro slaves:  Jane, aged about 10, Washington, aged about 7, and Martin and Judy, each aged about 55.   Conveyance is void if Crosswell pays his debt. Wit. W. C. Q-37-38.  Mortgage. Apr. 25, 1848.  To secure a debt of $1430, Darias L. Stuckey conveys to E. A. Law, commissioner in equity, negro slaves Affee, aged about 30 years and her four children:


George, aged about 11, Bennett, aged about 5, Judy, aged about 3, and Thomas, aged about 1 year.  Conveyance is void if Stuckey pays his debt.  Wit. J. E. Hallford.  Pr. Apr. 27, 1848. (No recording date.)

 

Q-44.  Deed of Gift. Dec. 11, 1845.  Celia McLendon conveys to her son Kinion McLendon a negro woman Caroline, aged about 15 years and her child Henry, aged about 1 year, and Needham [?], a negro boy aged about 8 years, with their future increase.  In exchange, Kinion and his co-obligators are to provide her with support for life.  Wit. Saml. J. Ervin.  Pr. May 4, 1848.  Rec. May 4, 1848.

 

Q-45. Deed of Gift.  Dec. 11, 1845.  Celia McLendon conveys to her son James R. McLendon a negro boy Dunmore, aged about 13 years and a negro boy John, aged about 12 years.  In exchange, James and his co-obligators are to provide her with support for life. Wit. Saml. J. Ervin.  Pr. May 4, 1848.  Rec. May 4, 1848.

 

Q-50-51.  Mortgage.  May 2, 1848.  To secure her bond of $800 conditioned on the payment of a debt of $430, Frances Ann Leger conveys to Benjamin W. James, five negro slaves: Myrah, old Myrah, Cretia, Daniel and Sarah.  If Frances  pays the debt, the conveyance is void.  Wit. J. W. P. McRagan. Pr. May 13, 1848.  (No recording date.)

 

Q-60-61.  Deed of Gift.  June 10, 1848.  Elizabeth Kennedy conveys property due to her from the estate of her deceased son William Kennedy and from the estate of her late husband Thomas Kennedy. Elizabeth’s daughter Martha Emily Gregg receives Elizabeth’s interest in and right to the negro Isam, and Elizabeth’s interest in the “negro property” to which her deceased son William was entitled from the estate of his father Thomas Kennedy.  Her two daughters Sarah W. Kennedy and Frances Malvina Howe are to divide equally her interest in the negro property Elizabeth is entitled to from her late husband Thomas Kennedy’s estate, excepting the negro property herein given to Martha Emily Gregg.  Also mentioned, daughter Ann L. Kennedy.  Elizabeth retains a life interest in all this property.  Wit. E. A. Law, Tho. W. Smoot.  Pr. June 14, 1848.  Rec. June 14, 1848.

 

Q-87.  Deed of Gift.  Aug. 14, 1848.  Reddick Langston gives to his son Wade H. Langston, a nego girl named Bes, aged 15, “in the room of a negro boy that I gave him by will that is deceased.”  Wit. John Langston, Ervin Langston.  Pr. Dec. 4, 1848.

 

Q-111.  Bill of Sale.  Jan. 31, 1849.  Edwin James sells two negro boys Sidney (aged 10) and Sam (aged 7) to Mary Britt for $550.  Wit. Saml. O. McCown, James McCown.  Pr. Feb. 2, 1849. Rec. Feb. 2, 1849.

 

Q-111.  Deed of Gift.  Jan. 31, 1849.  Mary Britt conveys two negro boys Sidney (aged 10) and Sam (aged 7) to her daughter Mary F. James for her lifetime and then to her children.  Wit. Saml. O. McCown, James McCown. Pr. Feb. 2, 1849.  Rec. Feb. 2, 1849.

 

Q-114.  Deed of Gift.  Jan. 8, 1848 [sic].  James C. Garner conveys negro girl Margaret, aged about 5, to James N. Garner, Nancy S. P. Garner and Joseph Z. Garner, children of Samuel N. Garner, deceased. Wit. Geo. P. Cannon, Wm. Heath.  Pr. Jan. 23, 1849.  Rec. Jan. 30, 1849.


 

Q-118.  Mortgage.  Feb. 16, 1849. To secure a debt of $725, Wm. L. Morse conveys to W. C. Bruce three negro slaves:  Nancy and her two children Cyrus and Sally. Conveyance is void if Morse pays debt.  Wit.  K. C. DuBose, W. H. Evans.  Pr. Feb. 22, 1849.  Rec. Mar. 2, 1849.

 

Q-119. Trust Deed of Gift.  Sumter Dist., Jan. 16, 1849.  John Blount Miller, planter of Sumter Dist., conveys to Evan J. Lide, in trust for Miller’s daughter Martha A. M. Lide, the following negroes:  Isaac, aged about 60; Susa, his wife, between 40 and 45 years; their children Sally , b. 5 May 1833; Collin, b. 8 Jan. 1838; Paul, b. 14 Jan. 1840; Susy, b. 7 Jan. 1842; Simon, b. 19 Jan. 1844; Bina, b. 9 Nov. 1847; and their future increase, for Martha’s sole and separate use for her lifetime and then to her children. Wit. Q-123-24.  Trust Deed of Gift. Jan. 29, 1849.  Josiah H. Smoot of Sumter Dist. conveys to Peter A. Brunson a negro female named Elsey, aged about 10, with her future increase, in trust for the sole use of Susan Ann Young, a minor under 21.  Wit. Hiram H. Ruff, J. H. Huggins.  Pr. Q-124-25.  Trust Deed of Gift.  Jan. 29, 1849.  Josiah H. Smoot of Sumter Dist. conveys to Peter A. Brunson a female negro slave name Eliza, about 12 years of age, with her future increase, in trust for Peter’s daughter Maria Bacot Brunson, a minor under 21, for her sole use.  Wit.  Hiram H. Q-136.  Bill of Sale.  Aug. 26, 1848.  Francis O. W. Turner and Hugh Turner sell to John H. Muldrow, a negro man Howard for $600.  Wit. George Mc McIlvene.  Pr. Feb. 5, 1849.  Rec.  Apr. 16, 1849.

 

Q-151-52.  Mortgage.  Jan. 1, 1849.  To secure his debts totalling $800 in four notes owing to George W. Dargan, John Fountain, Evan J. Lide and Peter A. Wilds, S. B. Wilkins conveys to them a negro woman slave named Dianna, about 28 years old, and her five children: Lavince [?], Stephen, Harriet, Adam and Susannah.  Conveyance is void if debt is paid by Jan. 1, 1853.  Wit. Q-161-62.  Deed of Gift.  Mar. 16, 1849.  Mary F. Leger conveys to her sister Frances A. Leger two negro women named Miror [?], one aged about 50 years, and the other aged about 25 or 30 years, and also conveys to Frances A. Leger her interest in three other negroes: Cretia, about 40 years; Sarah, about 12 years; and Daniel, about 8 years.  Wit. B[right]. Wadsworth, Amos Hill, Jr.  Pr. Aug. 31, 1849.  Rec. Q-187-88.  Trust Deed of Gift.  Dec. 18, 1849.  John D. Witherspoon conveys to James H. DuBose of Alabama, certain negroes in trust for Witherspoon’s daughter, Elizabeth B. DuBose, wife of Kimbro C. DuBose, and then to her children. Negroes named are Naas, Clarissa, Levan, Frank, LaFayette, Eliza, Dave, Nanny, Clarisssa Jr., Harriete, Mary, Ann [perhaps Mary Ann?], Judy, Solomon, Simon, Charity, Sylvia, Richardson, Celia, Amelia, Abner, Mitty, Caroline, Esther, Frank, Sary, Grace, Chloe, Sam, Eliza, Lydia, Philip, Fanny, Sam, Hannah.  Wit. Q-188-89.  Substitution of Trustee.  Jan. 4, 1850.  By permission of the equity court, James H. DuBose is substituted as trustee in the place of Boykin Witherspoon and John Witherspoon, of certain negro slaves conveyed to them by John N. Williams by deed dated Feb. 7, 1843, and recorded in Book O, pages 107, 108, 109.  Signed Thomas C. Evans, commissioner of equity.   Rec. Jan. 4, 1850.

 

Q-189.  Trust Deed of Gift.  Chesterfield Dist., Jan. 8, 1850.  John Witherspoon of Chesterfied Dist. conveys to James H. DuBose of Marengo Co., Alabama, negroes Albert and his wife Tamar, their issue and increase, in trust for Kimbro C. DuBose’s wife E. B. DuBose, sister of John Witherspoon, and then to her children.   If the slave Albert dies leaving Tamar his wife surviving, J. H. DuBose is to sell the woman Tamar to W. E. Dargan of Darlington Dist. if he chooses to buy her, for $800.  The proceeds are to be invested in another female slave or slaves to the benefit of the trust established here.  Wit. B[oykin]. Q-190. Bill of Sale.  Jan. 8, 1850.  Thomas C. Evans, commissioner in equity, sells a negro slave named Mary Ann, aged, about 17 years, to William F. Zimmerman for $514.  The sale is made pursuant to the determination of the equity court in a proceeding brought by Sarah. A. Moye against George H. Moye and others, to determine the disposition of negroes belonging to the estate of W. L. Moye, deceased.  Wit. Wm. H. Wingate.  Pr. Jan. 8, 1850.  Rec. Jan. 9, 1850.

 

Q-191.  Agreement. Marlborought Dist., Dec. 18, 1849.  Catharine Billingsly has loaned to Henry E. P. Sanders for the year 1850 a negro man Dennis, commonly called little Dennis.  Sanders obligates himself to take proper care of the negro and to return him to Billingsly at the end of the year.  Wit. T. E. B. Pegues.  Rec. Jan. 9, 1850.

 

Q-192-93.  Mortgage.  Dec. 29, 1849. To secure a bond of $3060 conditioned for a debt of $1530, Ladson L. Fraser of Sumter Dist. conveys to Thomas A. Boone, a minor, negroes Peggy, Ben, Charlotte, Beck and Peggy, Jr.  Conveyance is void if debt is paid.  Wit.  J. B. F. Boone.  Pr. Sumter Dist., Dec. 28, 1849.  Rec. Jan. 12, 1850.

 

Q-193-94.  Mortgage.  Dec. 29, 1849.  To secure a bond of $1370 conditioned for a debt of $685, John O. Kelly of Sumter Dist. conveys to Thomas A. Boone, a minor, negro Moses.  Conveyance is void if debt is paid.  Wit.  J. B. F. Boone.  Pr. Sumter Dist., Dec. 8, 1849.  Rec. Jan. 12, 1850.

 


Q-220-221. Mortgage.  Jan. 28, 1850.  To secure the obligation which James S. Gibson made Jan. 16, 1850 to James Gillespie of Marlborough Dist. in the sum of $7600 conditioned for the payment of $3800, owed by Edgar W. Charles to Gillespie, Edgar W. Charles conveys to Gibson the following negroes with their future increase:  Ned, about 41 years, his wife Polly, about 35 years, and her children Kent, about 11, Flora, about 9, Nelly, about 7, and Juno, about 5;  Oscar, about 37, and his wife Laura, about 29, and her children Anna, about 7, Enoch, about 4, and China, about 2.  Conveyance is void if Charles fulfills his obligation.  Wit.  Saml. Q-223-24.  Deed of Gift.  Jan. 25, 1850. John Tolson gives his daughter Elizabeth Tolson, a negro girl named Linda, aged about 14 years, commonly called Lin, with her increase. If Elizabeth dies without issue, Linda is to to Tolson’s surviving children.  During Elizabeth’s minority prior to marriage, Linda is to remain under John’s control.  Wit.  J. Q-224-25.  Mortgage.  Feb. 2, 1850.  To secure a bond of $700 dated Feb. 2, 1850, conditional for the payment of a debt of $350, Frances A. Leger conveys to Thomas Stephenson four negroes:  Polly, Charles, Flora and Susan. Conveyance is void if debt is paid. Wit. S. Wilds DuBose, M. B. Stanly.  Pr. Feb. 2, 1850.  Rec. Feb. 7, 1850.

 

Q-231. Mortgage.  Feb. 19, 1850.  To secure a bond of $1865.60, conditioned for the payment of $932.80, Goodwin Wallace conveys to Jesse Kilgore and Sarah Jones, executors of the estate of Leroy [?] Jones, deceased, negro slaves Lizzy, Archy and Tenah, with their increase.  Conveyance is void if debt is paid. Wit. Wm. M. Shannon.  Pr. Kershaw Dist., Feb. 20, 1850.  Rec. Feb. 25, 1850. 

 

Q-232-33. Mortgage.  Feb. 17, 1850.  To secure a bond of $4600, conditioned for the payment of $2300, Goodwin Wallace conveys to Jesse Kilgore and Sarah Jones, executors of the estate of Leroy Jones, negro slaves Jack, Tenah, Minter [?], Tisbah, Bob, Porteous, Thaddeus and Margaret.  Conveyance is void if debt is paid.  Wit.  Wm. Q-233-34.  Mortgage.  Feb. 19, 1850.  To secure a bond of $1080, conditioned for the payment of $540, J. W. Mixon conveys to Jesse Kilgore and Sarah Jones, executors of the estate of Leroy Jones, a female negro slave named Cindy, with her future increase.  Conveyance is void if debt is paid.  Wit. Wm. M.
