T-15-16. Acknowledgment and Statement. May 4, 1859. Benjamin C. Norment and Hannah Louisa Norment acknowledge that Joseph B. Nettles has placed the possession of Hannah Louisa Norment the slaves Marcus, Rose, Charlotte and Minerva for her sole and separate use until called for by Joseph B. Nettles or Hannah M. Nettles, or the persons entitled to them after the death of Joeph B. and Hannah. In consideration of the use of the slaves, Hannah is to pay the taxes on them. The slaves are part of those referred to in a deed of settlement and schedule executed by Benj. C. Norment and Hannah Louisa his wife and Robert B. Nettles on May 7, 1857 and in which Hannah Louisa is interested, but her enjoyment is postponed until after the death of Joseph B. and Hannah M. Nettles. Wit. J. A. T-21. Letter. Darlington C[ourt]. H[ouse]., May 14, 1859. Charles C. Law and Desda S. Law to Dr. Wm. H. Godbold, directing him to invest the proceeds of the sale of the house and lot sold to Dr. R. L. Hart about March 1858, approximately $4500, in the purchase of Negro slaves now the property of C. C. Law: Lazerus, Dave, Casey and Sylvia and her four children (Lizzy, Albert, Addy and Paul). The slaves are to be held as provided in their Marriage Settlement dated Jan 15, 1857, of which Godbold is trustee. Rec. May 20, 1859. [See T-28.]

T-28. Receipt. Darlington C. H., May 14, 1859. Charles C. Law gives receipt for $4500 to Wm. H. Goldbold, trustee, for Negroes [named] purchased as in T-21, above. Law warrants that the Negroes are sound and slaves for life. (no recording date.)

T-57-59. Mortgage. Apr. 29, 1859. J. Hartwell Hart, to secure his bond of $35,450 guaranteeing payment of his debt of $17,775 owing to Mrs. Hannah Hart, due in installments beginning Jan. 1, 1860, conveys to her Negro slaves Aid, Allen, Sandy, Sally, Alice, Calvin, Grace, Mark, Nora, infant child of Grace (name not remembered), George, Harriet, Dave, Viny and infant child of Viny (name not remembered). T-59-60. Mortgage. Apr. 29, 1859. Robert L. Hart, to secure his bond of $10,800 guaranteeing payment of his debt of $5400 owing to Mrs. Hannah Hart, due in installments beginning on Jan. 1, 1860, conveys to her Negro slaves Stephen, Binah, Chany, Richmond, Joe, Amanda, Wesley, Eugenia, and Mercia [sic]. T-73-75. Trust Deed of Gift. July 11, 1859. John Nicholas Williams conveys to his sons John W. Williams and George F. Williams, certain property in trust for his daughter Alice Frost, wife of Thomas Frost of Charleston. The property includes Negro slaves Harriet, Harriet [sic, twice], Maria, Thomas, Cornelius and Laura with their future increase; $50,000 and certain stocks and bonds. T-75-76. Trust Deed of Gift. Feb. 25, 1859. John Nicholas Williams conveys to John Witherspoon and John W. Witherspoon, in trust for his cousin Mary Elizabeth Bacot, wife of Henry H. Bacot and then to their children, Negro slaves Patty and her children Betty and Nancy, and a 40 acre tract of land (two lots) near Society Hill. Wit. John Stimfort Kidney, Theodore Sompayrac. Pr. T-123. Bill of Sale. Macon Co., Alabama, Feb. 28, 1859. William D. Williams of Macon Co., Ala., sells to James O. Hale of Darlington Co., S. C., all his right and interest in the following negroes: Polly, a woman aged about 45; Hannah, a woman aged about 23; Jerry, a boy aged about 12; Caesar, a boy about 9; Anthony, a boy aged about 7; Margaret, a girl aged about 3; and Laura, an infant aged about 8 months. They are property of the estate of Benj. F. Williams, late of Darlington Dist., and William D. Williams is the sole heir to that property. Consideration for the sale is that James O. Hale has paid the debt of Williams’ brother, the late Benj. F. Williams, in the amount of $1887.23, and has also paid to Williams an additional $2112.77. (No witnesses). Pr. Macon Co., Ala., Feb. 28, 1859, by Lewis Alexander, judge of probate, stating that Williams informed him that he executed the bill of sale voluntarily. Rec. July 23, 1859.

T-148. Trust Deed of Gift. Mar. 1, 1858. James D. Wright gives to William G. Wright, a Negro woman Mary aged 18, and Susan aged one, with their increase, in trust for James’ daughter Joanna Wright and her heirs, and not subject to her debts. T-158-59. Division of Estate. Jan. 6, 1859. Pursuant to the marriage settlement executed between William F. B. Haynesworth and Mary L. his wife (then Mary L. Charles) and B. W. Edwards, trustee, E. W. Charles (owner of the interest or share of Andrew C. Charles), Hugh L. Charles, and B. W. Edwards (trustee) have appraised and divide Negro slaves bequethed to Andrew L. Charles, Hugh L. Charles and Mary, by their grandfather Hugh Lide, deceased. They are appraised as follows: Burrell, $1050; Nep or Nephew, $650; Becky, $100; Jake, $950; Hannah, $800; Hagar, $650; Nancey, $750; Maria, $750; Santee, $1050; Tom, $650; Linda, $200; Aaron, $1000; Little Nancy, $800; Cretia, Julius and Aaron, $1250; Salina, $625; Jack, $900; Bettie [?], $150; Orange, $1000; Ary, $900; Sylvia, $800; Sam, $500; Aleck, $300; Peter, $300; in all $16,125. They have divided the negroes as follows: To Edgar W. Charles, owner of the interest of Andrew B. Charles: Burrell, Nep or Nephew, Becky, Jake, Hannah, Hagar, Nancy, Maria, amounting to $5700 or $325 more than his share. To Hugh L. Charles: Santee, Tom, Linda, Aaron, Little Nancey, Cretia, Julius, Anna [sic]; amounting to $4950 or $425 less than his share. To B. W. Bacot conveys to him in trust for herself, themselves and their heirs, slaves Wilson, Frank, Jeny, Lydia, Julia, Robert, Evline, Laura, and three others who were bequeathed to her in the will of her brother Peter A. T-186-87. Deed of Gift. Dec. 5, 1859. Hannah Hart conveys to John L. Hart, trustee for her daughter Elizabeth J. Edwards, wife of Augustus F. Edwards, slaves Cloe, Susannah, Milley, Jacob, Philip, Jane, Solomon, Mozelle, Suckey, Rosier, Zilpha, Dilla, Amy, Cynthia, Sanders, Ned, Chany, Caroline, Charley, Olivia, Zack, Serena, Tim, Betsey, Henrietta, Alick. The trust is for the sole use of Elizabeth and not for her present or future husband, and then to her children upon their reaching age 21, etc. Failing Elizabeth’s issue, they are to go to the use of Hannah’s children Robert L. T-190-93. Deed of Trust. Oct. 22, 1859. Ann K. Wallace conveys to Caleb Coker, land and slaves in trust to protect the property in order to carry out the provisions of the will of her late husband Goodwin Wallace of Marlborough Dist. Under the terms of his will, dated Aug. 17, 1855 and recorded in Marlborough, she was bequethed $10,000 in trust to provide for the education of their sons John B. G. Wallace, George W. D. Wallace, Barney L. McQueen Wallace and Robert B. R. C. Wallace. Ann K. Wallace purchased 268 acres of land on Tomahawk Branch in Darlington Dist. from Robert M. Saverance, and Ann conveys this land as well as negro slaves Guy, Peggy, Rosannah, Bill, Prince, Minnie, Amy, Jim, Hester and child Cato, to Caleb Coker in trust for Ann’s sole and separate use during her lifetime, with Ann to retain possession, with the income to support the education of her sons in compliance with the terms of the will. Extensive provisions for the trust are made in the event of her death before or after the youngest of her children have reached the age of 21.  T-243-44. Mortgage. Feb. 3, 1860. To secure his bond of Feb. 3, 1860 of $9101.70, security for the payment of $4550.85 owing to Thomas Ashby, L. W. T. Wickham conveys to Ashby Negro slaves George, Serena and child, Cornelia, Kit, and Charley. The conveyance is void if Wickham pays his debt to Ashby as agreed. Wit. Roland Rhett, James H. Brown. Pr. T-249-52. Marriage Settlement. Feb. 23, 1860. Contemplating a marriage between Sarah J. Fountain and Peter S. A. Bacot, Sarah’s negro slaves and proceeds from the sale of property of her deceased father George H. Fountain, are conveyed to John R. Cannon, in trust for her. Extensive terms are provided. A schedule of property is attached, including Negroes Molly, Rachael, Amanda, Silas, Horrace and Nelson, and one seventh of two- thirds of all funds belonging to the estate of her deceased father George H. T-261-62. Mortgage. Jan. 2, 1860. Ezra A. White conveys to Thomas B. Haynsworth, equity commissioner, a Negro slave Celia, formerly belonging to Miss Louisa E. White.
