H-7. Deed of Gift. Aug. 11, 1820. James Powell gives to his children, children of his wife Mildred Powell, who are Sarah (aged about 13), Mary Ann (11), Absalom (9), Martha (7), Margarett (5), Catharine (2), land where he now lives, first granted to John Powell in 1786 and conveyed to him James Powell as son of John in 1807, and also a negro man Titus aged about 22, a negro girl Rebeckry, aged about 13, and various furniture, and the increase, to be divided when Catharine comes of age, or before if any heirs leave the property. Thomas Kennedy, planter, gives to his daughter Margaret Kennedy, to comply with the desire his deceased wife made before her death, a negro woman slave named Lydia. Three negroes Valentine, Mark and Bridget, are to be divided between her children with instructions to even out the distribution among all her children, including James Norwood, Lorenzo Norwood, Elizabeth Chandler, Theophilus, Zachariah, Jannet and Hannah. H-86. Articles of Agreement. May 20, 1820. Mason Lee covenants with Isham Parnell that he will sell to Parnell a tract of land lately purchased from Parnell, with the crop thereon, three mules now there, and three Negroes Harry, Pleasant and Annis until the crop is finished and the Negroes until the crop is housed, food for three hands, and the labor of Parnell's son Carney and John Tedder who is now hired by Lee until the crop is laid by. Parnell is to pay Lee $1300, payable Jan. 1, 1822. Parnell mortgages the land to Lee, supposed to be two tracts totalling 450 acres, as security. Wit. Geo. Bruce, Jno. B. Bruce. Pr. May 17, 1821. H-91-92. Mortgage. May 12, 1821. Robert Campbell conveys a Negro Mariah to Edmund Gee, as security for a note of $300 which Gee signed on Campbell's behalf securing Campbell's debt of $300 owing to Samuel Stephenson, which Campbell made in August 1820. Brown, which is secured by her bond dated May 10, 1821 in the amount of $1398, Mary McCoy Brown of Marlborough Dist. conveys to Morgan G. Brown the following Negroe Slaves: Esther, a Negro woman aged about 35 years and her four children Joe a boy, Sarah a girl, Ann a girl and Val a boy and their increase. Martha Price, planter, gives to her grandchildren Agness Mattuce, Jenney Mattuce and Charles Mattuce, and to the bodily heirs of Martha's daughter Kinson [?] Perdue Mattuce hereafter begotten, a Negro woman Caroline and her increase, to be equally divided between them. H-143-44. Mortgage. Dec. 20, 1821. Martin Dewitt bought a Negro man Jim at the sale of the property of the late Mrs. Martha Smith, David Gregg and John F. Wilson, executors, for $300, payable in two years from Mar. 26 last, with interest. To secure the executors in the sum of $300 plus interest, Dewitt conveys to the executors the said Jim and Tilla his wife. If Dewitt pays as agreed, the conveyance is void. Wit. William Kirven. Pr. McIver has purchased from Edward Burch of Marion Dist. a mill seat on Jeffreys Creek, by his bond dated Aug. 24, 1815, in the sum of $2680, conditioned for the securing of the payment of $1340 with interest. John F. Wilson secured McIver's bond, and in order to secure Wilson, McIver conveys to him three Negroes: a man named Jim about 30 years old, a boy named Ben about16 years old, and boy named Pompey about 15 years old. The conveyance is void if Selph is ever obliged to pay two notes drawn by Dudley and discounted: one in the Bank of Cape Fear for $400, due June 20 last, and the other for $275, on the State Bank of North Carolina which will become due on Aug. 21 next, both which notes were endorsed by John Selph and John McKay.
