K-18-19.  Sheriff Sale Deed.  Jan. 1, 1827.  Richard Ingram, Sheriff, sells to Timothy D. Pettigrew for $386, a negro man Billy, sold as the property of Timothy J. Stephenson, to satisfy an action of debt brought by James and Andrew Hunter and others.  Wit.  Rasha Cannon.  Pr. Jan. 2, 1827.  Rec. May 15, 1827.

K-24. Affidavit.  Dec. 23, 1826.  Martha Oakley swears before justice of the peace William L. Moye that she was present and saw the child known as Elias Oakley born and that he was born of a white woman and that Elias was raised by Robert Taylor from his infancy. Mrs. Sarah Taylor swears Elias has been with her from about one year old that he has always been known as the child of a white woman, “and that his mother whom was white frequently came to see the said child” after he was bound to her husband Robert Taylor. K-74-75.  Mortgage.  Oct. 19, 1827.  To secure debt of $8025, Elias D. Law conveys negroes to Timothy D. Pettigrew:  Prosper, Munday, Lunnon, Stepney, Derry, Lawyer, Peter, Munday (boy), Hammond, March, Cecar [sic], Ambose [sic], Anthony, Bess, Phoebe, Mary (woman), Mary (girl),  Judy, Harriet, Patsy, Minda, Toney, Joe, Rose.  Wit.  Geo. W. Dargan, S. B. Wilkins.  Pr. Oct. 11, 1827.  Rec.  Oct. 23, 1827.  This mortgage is marked as satisfied.

K-93-94.  Mortgage.  Oct. 12, 1827.  To secure debt of $978.14, John E. Cannon conveys to Isaac H. H. Hunter, four negroes with their increase:  fellow Jack, boy Sim, wench Maria and her child Joshua, “all of which negroes I have heretofore owned for some time.”  Conveyance is void if Cannon repays the debt as agreed. Wit.  J. Bruce, including land on Boggy Gully and land bought of Samuel Wilson and negroes: Tom, Mary, Cressy, Minda, Lascey, Edmund, Lizzy, Joe, Cherry, Sarah, Bill, Jude. Conveyance is void if Buckley appears at the March next general sessions court at Darlington Court House.  Any balance to go to his wife Mary A. K-186-87.  Trust Deed.  Apr. 10, 1828.  Jane H. Alexander, late of North Carolina now of Darlington Dist., South Carolina, to son Abraham F. Alexander, for the love she has for her daughter Mary W. Morgan, wife of Rev. Nicholas R. Morgan, in trust for Mary, conveys the following negroes:  Joseph (age 18), Marietta (aged 16), Lucinda (aged 10), Harriet (aged 6), Lysander (aged 6).  Negroes to be free from the control of any husband of Mary or from any debt action.  So long as Mary or her son Nathaniel Alexander Morgan are living, slave Lysander is not to be sold.  Lysander to go to Nathaniel at Mary’s death upon condition that Lysander not be sold.   Wit.  M. K-197-99.  Mortgage.  Feb. 20, 1828. To secure his bond to the sheriff for which James S. McCall is security, James M. Sanders conveys to James S. McCall, negroes: Amos, Lydia, Dennis, Andrew, Abby, Selah, Binah, Penny, Ginney, Judah, Hall, Emily and child Sendal.   Conveyance is void if Sanders complies with provisions of the bond or satisfies it.  Additional notation, June 4, 1829, substituting Becky, Dembo, George, Ned and Daniel for Jude [sic] and Emily.  Wit.  S[imon]. K-221-22.  Bill of Sale.  Mar. 13, 1828.  William Warr, Jr. and Sarah his wife sell for $302 to Abel Rogers and William Rogers, their undivided share of negroes Lively, Persilla, Tamer, Rose, Emily and Tamer’s boy child Alexander, being one fifth of the slave property of the estate of Elisha Rogers, deceased, “and which by law we are justly entitled to.” Also conveys [the proceeds from] their hire since January 1 to Abel and William.  Wit.  S. K-276-79.  Trust Deed.  Dec. 30, 1828.  Eli Holloman conveys all his property to his brother Joseph J. Fort and Silas Hollamon,  in trust for himself,  to protect his estate, being intemperate. They are to pay his old debts and support him.  Schedule of property, including “all my negroes”: Hester, Elizabeth, Rhoda, Lewis, John, Rebecca, Hesther, Henry, Peter, Isbel, Sal, Alfred, Alla, Jesse, Ira, William, Mary & child, Ann, Stephen.  The list of slaves in the body of the deed suggests that Ann may be child of Mary; Hesther is spelled Hester. Henry is not listed in the body of the deed, only in the schedule.  Wit. Geo. W. Dargan, Jno. B. Bruce.  Pr.  Jan. 3, 1829.  Rec.  Jan. 5, 1829.

K-315-17.  Marriage Settlement.  Apr. 2, 1829.  John E. Cannon contemplates marriage with Mary A. W. Cook.  To protect five negroes of Mary, they are conveyed in trust to Rasha Cannon.  Negroes named:  Lony, Amelia, Harbert, Anna & Maria.  John E. Cannon is to enjoy use and profits of the said negroes and their increase during his lifetime, then to Mary and her assigns or heirs.  Wit.  Wm. L. Moye, Wm. R. Cannon.  Pr.  Apr. 3, 1829.  Rec. K-324-25.  Mortgage.  Feb. 18, 1829.  Elias D. Law to Rasha Cannon and Isaiah DuBose, as security for certain promissary notes, these negroes are conveyed:  Sophy and her child Edmund; Hannah and five children, Lony, Lydia, Amy, Joan and Tom; Mary Ann and children Hubbert and Susy; girl Maria; Sunday; Sylvia; Anthony.  If Law complies with the requirements of the note, the conveyance is void.  Wit.  Thos. Ruffin formerly of North Carolina but now of South Carolina conveys to John DuBose, three negroes: Ralph, aged about 45, Anthony, aged about 25, and Bill, aged about 20, and other property.   The conveyance is void if the bond is paid.  Wit. K-426-27.  Bill of Sale. Jan. 15, 1830.  Kinsey Brown to Martha Boothe, for $100, without warranty, certain negroes [not named, see K-425-26] transferred to him by Bill of Sale by Zachariah Brown, being the negroes which Zachariah Brown “claimed in consequence of his intermarriage with Elizabeth Swails now his wife Elizabeth Brown.”  Wit.  J[os]. K-429-32.  Mortgage.  Jan. 5, 1830.  Elias D. Law agreed to purchase Negroes from Timothy D. Pettigew for $8,025 (as valued by Hugh Lide, Pleasant R. Gee and Rasha Cannon), with a purchase mortgage dated Oct. 11, 1827 due 50% on Jan. 1, 1831 and 50% on Jan. 1, 1834.  The 24 Negroes purchased were Prosper, London, Stepney, Derry, Lawyer, Peter, Monday, Hammond, March, Ceasar, Ambrose, Anthony, Bess, Mary, Phebe, mary a woman, Judy, Harriet, Patty, Monder, Monday a man, Toney, Joe and Rose.  Subsequently it appeared that Pettigrew could not make good title to Toney, Rose and Joe and Pettigrew agreed to deduct their value from the notes securing the mortgage.  Two new notes dated Jan. 25, 1828 were agreed to, one for $3,662.58 due Jan. 1, 1831, and one for the same amount due Jan. 1, 1834.  In consideration, Pettigrew conveys to Law, 24 negroes:  Prosper, Lonnon, Stepney, Derry, Lawyer, Peter, Monday, Hammond, March, Ceaser, Ambrose, Anthony, Bess, Phebe, Mary a girl, Mary a woman, Judy, Harriet, Patty, Minder, Munday a man.  Marked satisfied (not dated).  Wit. S. B. Wilkins, Geo. W. Dargan.  Pr. Jan. 19, 1830.  Rec. Jan. 19, 1830.

K-460-62.  Trust Deed.  Feb. 20, 1828.  Absolom Wright gives to Soloman Wright, 100 acres of land and various chattels, including slaves Phoebe and Peter and their future increase, in exchange for Solomon’s paying his debts and providing for the support of his family.  During the joint lives of Absolom and his wife Rosanna, they are to retain the slaves, live on the land, etc.  Wit.  Andrew Davis, Henry Jones.  Pr. Mar. 2, 1830  Rec.  Mar. 8, 1830.

K-462-64. Trust Deed.  July 6, 1829.  Eli Hollaman conveys to his brother Joseph J. Fort and Silas Hollamon, in trust for himself, due to his intemperance, property which descended to him from his mother, Ann Hopkins, including a negro man Carey, horses and cattle, household items.  After his death the property is to descend to Eli’s heirs by will.  Wit.  Richardson F.
