113.  Lydia Lucas (colored, freedwoman).  90 years of age, used to belong to Mr. Ben Lucas.  Lives at Mr. Clement Hayburn’s on other side of Jeffers Creek about 15 miles distant on road leading by Ebenezer Church.  Has son named Nero Rodgers, used to belong to John Rodgers, about 70 years old, who is able to work and  [run?] to Mr. Hayburn’s plantation. Nero has a wife named Lisett about 55 years and 17 children ranging from 40 years to 4 yrs.  Has six of these children working with him and two that are too young to work.  Has one hundred acres in Corn, 38 acres in Cotton.  3 acres in potatoes. 1 acre in rice, runs four ploughs.  Issued for Lydia, Nero and his wife Lisette for six days.  6 days.  {Issued for 10 days July 16th to old woman Lydia.}

 

114.  Sukie Jordan (colored, freedwoman) is 70 years old.  Used to belong to George Jordan.  Lives at same place as above.  Has a husband 80 years old, crippled, named Jacob, used to belong to Hayburn. Issued for Sukie & her husband for 6 days.  Nero has given Sukie & her husband a piece of land & helps them along. 6 days.

 

115.  August Williamson (colored, freedwoman) 84 years old.  Used to belong to Frank Williamson.  Is crippled with rheumatism.  Lives on Mr. McCall’s place on Pedee River about 12 miles distant on Society Hill road.  Issd. for 10 days.  10 days.  {Issued for 10 days July 2nd.  Issued for 10 days July 31st.}

118.  Darkis Williams (white).  Husband deserted her.  40 years old.  Lives in Chesterfield 11 miles from Society Hill near Camden Road in Steer Pen Beat.  Has a farm of fifteen acres.  Has some cotton, corn, etc. Her brother in law ploughs for her.  Has two pigs.  Has some chickens.  Has five children [  ?  ] One daughter married, one son 19 years old, two daughters 18 & 16 years.  One child under 12.  Has a mother living with her, who is 80 years old.  Son is crippled.  Issued for herself, her mother, son, & young child for 3 days. 3 day.

123.  Fatima Loyd (colored, freedwoman).  60 years old.  Has a husband named Lewis working on William Teddar’s place about 10 miles distant on Society Hill road.  Lewis has a mother named Jennie who is blind.  Issd. to Fatima & Jennie for 5 days. 5 days. {Issued to Fatima & Jennie for four days, July 14th.}

128.  Phillip Jordan (colored, freedman).  80 yrs. old. Lives on Mr. Paul Cervantes place 9 miles distant on Timmonsville road.  Is too old & feeble to work.  Issued for 10 days.  This man is very feeble.  {Issued for 10 days July 24th.}

 

129.  Sarah Barnes (white).  Widow, about 35 yrs. old.  Somewhat deranged.  A bad character but absolutely destitute.  Was brought from Timmonsvile by a Mr. Richard Rollins at the suggestion of a committee of citizens and left in the streets of Darlington without shelter.  Has four little children, three of them with her.  Issued for 4 days.  {Issued for 3 days July 13th.  Issued for 3 days July 17th.  Issued for 3 days July 23d.}

133.  David Johnston (white), 85 yrs. old.  Is insane.  Has a wife named Rebecca, 80 yrs. old.  Lives about 20 miles distant on road running from Camden to Society Hill in Darlington District.  Has four hogs and some chickens.   Lives on land belonging to his son, W. F. Johnston, who is married, with 5 children.  W. F. Johnston states he is unable to help his father. Case recommended by a. N. Stuckey, chairman of the Board of Poor. 147.  Amelia Anderson, daughter of Mrs. Amelia Anderson, is 16 years old.  Lives with her mother, Case 8, in this book, worked in the field with her sister Martha 17 years old, for Mr. Warley planter, for fifty cents a day.  Is now working in same manner on Dr. Henry Flynn’s place about 8 miles distant.  {Mrs. Zilpha Harper says there but three in the family unable to work, James Franklin & Judd.}  Her sister Alice 14 years old, lives with them.  She has two brothers and three sisters under 12 years.  Certificate of merit signed by Ed. 150.  Mary Stewart, white, widow, is 40 years old.  Lives on Lake Swamp 3 miles from Timmonsville.  Has six children.  Has a son 16 yrs., one of 15, daughter of 12, one of 10, one of 7, & one of 5 yrs.  Has 3/4 acres in potatoes & corn.  Has some chickens and four hogs. Mr. Haynsworth purchased the place for her but she has been unable to clear the land.  Her sons work with their grandmother on Middle Swamp.  Issued for herself & four children under 13 years for four days.  {Issued for 3 days July 12th for herself and 4 children.  Issued for herself and 4 children 3 days July 26th}

 

151.  Temperence Young (white) Widow is 53 yrs. old.  Lives near above place.  Has six children, five living with her of whom one son is 22 yrs. old.  A daughter of 18 & one of 16, son of 12 & a daughter of 8.  Has 175 acres in corn, cotton &. 158. Uriah Brown, white, 65 yr. old.   Has a wife named Mary same age.  Has one child of 14.  Lives about 21 miles distant on Camden & Society Hill road.  Has about 16 acres from his brother Daniel Brown who lives within 2 miles of him. Has a crop of corn & potatoes.  Has one ox, one cow, one sow, about a dozen chickens.  Not issued.

 

159.  Abigail Laney, white woman is 55 years old.  Lives by herself on Joe Hall’s place about 21 miles distant on Camden & Society Hill road, near above mentioned place.  Has about an acre.  Has no cow, or hogs or poultry.  Lives by spinning.  Issed for 6 days.

 

160.  Martha Boothe, white widow, is 60 years old. Lives on Middle Swamp about 10 miles distant with her daughter in law, Eliza{beth} Boothe, on Eliza’s father’s place, William Jeffords about 100 acres {in corn & potatoes}.  Has one married daughter living with her, named Mary Ann Stokes.  Issued for herself & Eliza for 3 days.  {See Case 9 this book. Has one cow, 4 hogs, 10 or 11 chickens.}

166.  Susannah Burris, white, widow, is 53 years old.  Husband dead 14 years.  Has 5 daughters living with her, oldest is a widow named Martha Meigs, 33 years old with five children under 10 years.  One daughter Tabitha Thomas is 30 years old.  Her husband Solomon is living with her on Paners [?] Pettigrews’ place.  Nancy 22 years, Susannah 18 yrs., Ursilla 16 yrs, Mary Lavinia 14 yrs are all living with Mrs. Burris about two miles from Florence on Wilmington R. R. on a farm belonging to herself containing 160 acres in corn, cotton & potatoes.  Has one horse  working, the property of London, freedman, who works for half the crop.  Has one milch cow.   Has some four pigs, one sow and six hogs.  Has about a dozen chickens.  Issued for Mrs. Burris, five daughters & five grandchildren for 3 days.
