August 4[, 1866]

 

214.  Mary Windham, white, 29 years old.  Husbands name John W. Windham an invalid, three children under 7 years.  Lives near Mary Anne Windham Case 197, this Book, on Ely Windham’s place.  Has a small garden, Husband unable to work or assist his father in making crop.  Lives in one of Ely’s houses.  Ely has five cows, 17 or 18 hogs, 25 chickens, 2 horses.  Ely has married a second time and has five small children for which reason he is not able to do for his son John’s family.  John has recommendation signed by R. Beasley, ex-magistrate.  Issued for John, wife & three children for four days.

 

215.  Penelope Garner, white, 36 years old.  Husband’s name Wesley S. Garner is an invalid.  Six children under 13.  Lives between Newman Swamp & Lynch’s Creek not far from Cartersville near A. N. Stuckey’s place.  Has about 15 acres planted in corn & cotton.  Has one cow, has 7 chickens, one horse.  Is recommended by Stuckey, Chairman of Board of Poor.  Issued for herself & children for four days.  See Case 179, this Book.

 

August 6

 

216.  Anthony, freedman, wife & seven children, John McClain [?] & wife, Hector & wife, August & wife & three children, Bob & wife are living on Murray’s Ferry Plantation.  Came up as witnesses in case of claims against J. J. Tisdale, Executor of Estate of William Stoggens [?] in Williamsburgh District.  Have a crop growing. Contracted for this year with M. M. A. Moore [?].  Are utterly without provisions and must leave their place to hunt for cash paying work unless helped.  Issued for ten days for all.

 

August 7

 

217.  Massey Hood, white widow, 50 years old. Has three children.  One son of 16 a cripple for life, two girls under 10.  Lives on Sparrow Swamp 10 miles distant on Widow PeneMim’s [?] place on Road from Sumterville to Darlington, 5 miles this side of Carter’s Bridge over Lynch’s Creek.  Has a small kitchen garden.  Has nothing but a few chickens.  Works at the plough whenever she can get employment.  Is recommended by Wm. W. Jerrett [?] of Mr. Stuckey’s Steam mill and by Dr. Byrd of Timmonsville, also by D. A. McEackon ex-magistrate.  Issued to all for five days.

 

218.  Elizabeth Floyd Atkinson, white, is 38 years old.  Husband’s name Burrill Atkinson who has convulsions & has not lived with her for some time.  Elizabeth lives about 3 miles distant in same house with Lucretia Maples case 22 this Book.  Has one married daughter {Mary Johnson} who does not live with her.  Has two daughters under 10.  Is recommended by Dr. B. C. Normant of Darlington.  Issued for four days.

 

219.  Francis Hood, white {or mulatto} 24 year old.  Husband’s name Richard works at Mrs. Hadford’s place.  Lives about 14 miles distant on Newman Swamp. Take Camden road & Lynch’s Creek road.  Lives on Elisha Notsey’s [?] place.  Richard gets one third of crop on Widow Wadford’s place.  Has one sow, 8 chickens.  Has one child about 2 years old.  Is recommended by W. W. Jewett [?] & Dr. Byrd of Timmonsville.  Issued for five days to herself & child.

 

220.  Elizabeth McDuffie, white widow, 36 years old.  Has three children under seven.  Lives in Chesterfield 7 miles from Cheraw on Sneedsborough road to Pee Dee River near state line on Sam Odom’s place.  Has a garden.  Gets 25 cents a day when she can find work in the neighbors crops. Has no stock of any kind. Nothing but a log roof over her head.  Is recommended by J. P. Harrall, W. L. J. Reid [?] & J. H. Gooch of Cheraw.  Issued for ten days to all.  Has free ticket on R. R. from MacFarland.

 

221.  Mary Gardner, white, 35 years old.  Lives about 2 miles from above mentioned place.  Has three married sisters living with her named Martha, Sarah & Becky.  Is recommended by above mentioned gentlemen.  Has free ticket on R. R. from McFarland Pres.  Is directed to bring certificate of her sisters necessity.  Issued for herself alone for ten days.  Has about 40 or 50 acres. 6 or 7 acres planted in corn & potatoes.  Has one ox.  Has 8 hogs, 10 chickens, gets half the crop raised.

 

222. Arnold Hart, freedman, 45 years old.  Is afflicted with scrofula, lame & unable to work.  Lives at Mrs. Sarah Backus’ place at Springville 4 miles distant.  Is recommended by Dr. R. L. Hart of Darlington.  Wife’s name Katey who works for him.  Issued for ten days to himself alone.

 

223.  Sarah Gainey, white, is 23 years old.  Husband Barnewell [?] Gainey has deserted her.  Has two children under two years.  Lives on Mrs. Edith Mars’ place about 4 or 5 miles beyond Hartsville. Has no garden.  Lives in same house with Mrs. Mars & Moses Johnson an old man, both helpless.  Mrs. Mars has a pretty large farm, but only a woman to work it, took Sarah into her house out of charity.  Sarah is directed to bring certificate from some one who knows her.  Has a letter of recommendation signed by R. K. Charles of Darlington but he does not state that he knows her to be helpless.  Issued for five days to herself & two children.

 

224.  Sarah Atkinson, white widow, 28 years old.  Has two children under 7.  Lives near Timmonsville, S. C. on Mr. Morris place now occupied by his son in law Thomas Miller.  Has no garden.  Has no stock of any kind.  No relatives living in the State.  Is a grand daughter of Elivira Hicks, Case 60 this book.  Is recommended by R. D. Rollins, J. W. Morris, Henry Loyd, J. D. Keith, etc. of Timmonsville. Issued for herself & children for ten (10) days.

 

August 8

 

225.  Martha McFarland, white, 40 years old.  Has a husband, John, aged 84.  Has one child aged 3 years.  Lives in Cheraw in her own house.  Half acre not planted. Has some chickens, no other stock.  Knits & sews for support.  Father Edin Odom lives in the Country.  She is recommended by J. P. Harrall, J. H. Goven, W. L. J. Reid & R. T. Morgan of Cheraw.  Has free ticket on R. R. from President McFarland, who is no relation of hers.  Issued for four days to herself, husband & child.

 

226.  Elizabeth Poulson, white widow, 30 years old.  Has one boy of 13.  Lives in Cheraw, is cousin to above mentioned Martha McFarland.  Lives in Francis Lynch’s house.  Has a few chickens, no other stock.  Supports herself by sewing.  Has a sister named Jane Smith not living with her.  Is recommended by same persons as above.  Has free ticket on R. R. from President.  Issued for four days to self & child.

 

227.  Richmond Rogers, freedman, 34 years old.  Is totally blind.  Used to belong to Benj. M. Rogers of Marlboro Dist. near Parnassus {Clio Road}.  Has been living with his father Frank on Allen McFarland’s place. Was driven off by his father about a month ago.  Went then to Alex. McQueen’s place but is now driven thence.  Has a free ticket on R. R. from Pres.  Issued for 10 days.

 

August 9

 

228.  Mary Johnston, white, is 54 years old.  Husband’s name Uriah, 2 children.  One son of 18 & one child of 5.  Lives about six miles north of Chesterfield Court House on Turnpike road.  Has rented about 200 acres planted in corn, potatoes, peas, &c. a little cotton.  Her son has two cows, has 4 hogs, has a few chickens, one blind horse.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for five days to herself husband & one child.

 

229.  Betsey Campbell, white widow, 35 years old.  4 children.  Daughter of 16, rest under 13. Lives about 2 mile from above mentioned place.  Has 49 acres corn, potatoes & cotton.  Has 2 cows, one sow & some shotes.  10 chickens.  Free ticket on R. R.  Issued for five days to all.

 

230.  Jane Scaff, white widow, 43 years old.  Has eight children.  James 22 years works at Mr. Coneys Turpentine Still.  Martha 19 years, Lizzie 16, rest under 14.  James is now sick, but did get $15.00 a month.  Lives about 3 miles from Lynch’s creek, 6 miles from Timmonsville close to St. Pauls Church on Cartersville road.  East of Timmonsville, 4 miles from Cartersville and the Railroad.  Has about 100 acres unplanted.  Has a garden, one cow, 6 hogs, 6 chickens, [  ?   ]  Tried to plant a crop but could not borrow a horse or ox.  Is recommended by A. N. Stuckey, Chairman of Board of Poor.  Issued for self, daughter (grown) and six children for five days.

 

August 10

 

231.  Simon Hardee, freedman, about 90 years old.  One cannot understand a word he says.  Looks very old & feeble.  Can’t find out where he lives.  Issued for ten days.

 

232. Elizabeth Lizenbie, white widow, 65 years old.  Has one daughter named Elizabeth Hooks, widow, 24 years old.  Daughter has one child 6 years old.  Lives 3 miles from Chesterfield Court House on Jackson road.  See Case 199, this Book.  Youngs is brother in law to Mrs. Lizenbie.  Recommendation signed by H. Cains [?] Clker of Court, John H. Perkins Magistrate & others. Has about 4 acres in corn.  Has no stock at all.  Issued for five days.  {Issued for herself alone for 10 days, Aug. 16.}

 

233.  Lucy Gibson, freedwoman, 70 years old.  Is [   ?  ] & feeble.  Lives with Patty Toll in Darlington Village.  Is recommended by General Gile.  Issued for five days.

 

234.  Charlotte Blackwell, white, unmarried, 16 years old.  Is the eldest of a family of five sisters, orphans who lost both parents last summer. The other sisters are named Eliza 12 yrs., Susannah 10 yrs., Milly Ann 5 yrs., & Francis 4 {15} years.  No brother living. William Blackwell her uncle and Sallie Mosely her aunt do nothing for them.  The uncle lives near and the aunt lives in Kershaw Dist. near Camden.  Charlotte & her sisters live on land left by their father, 100 acres.  Samuel Gardner, white, has helped Charlotte to plant 7 acres in corn taking 2/3 of the crop for himself.  Charlotte has no stock of any kind except 2 chickens. Is recommended by Jas. W. Gardner & Ervin Tiller neighbors.  Is directed to bring certificate from some one better known. Issued for herself and sisters for seven days.  {Shows certificate Aug. 31st 66 from J. C. Newman, Magistrate.} {Mary Martin, Case 1 this book says there is a brother living named Uriah Blackwell and that there is another sister named Sarah who lives with her, Mary Martin.} [Sarah is also interlined adjacent to AFrancis.@]

 

235.  Mary Wallace, white, 40 years old.  Husbands name Jackson Wallace.  Is consumptive.  Has eight children. Daughter Henrietta 22, David, son of 16, rest under 15 years. Lives five miles from Cheraw on  Plunk [?] Road to Wadesborough.  Lives on Dr. Poe’s place.  Has about 4 acres in corn & peas.  Has one hog, 5 or 6 chickens, one horse.  Is recommended by D. McNair, R. J. Darganand others of Cheraw. Has free ticket on R. R.   Issued for self & 6 children for 3 days.

 

August 14

 

236.  Phoebe Norwood, freedwoman 66 years.  Lives on John Parrott place six miles distant on Camden road.  Has some grandchildren who have leased land this year but find it impossible to get provisions enough before harvest.  Is recommended by Geo. A. Norwood of Darlington. Issued for five days.

 

August 15

 

237.  Lena Loyd, white widow, 43 years old.  Lives on Boggy Gully on Ben Clements [?] place.  13 miles distant on Camden road.  Has six children under 14.  Has no land, no stock of any kind. All live in one room.  Father Abel Register lives near on Widow Nancy Harrell’s place land, who has two grown daughters helping to work crop.  Abel himself is palsied.  Lena has recommendation from M. Moses of Darlington.  Issued for herself and children for ten days.

 

238.  Margaret Loyd, white widow, 70 years old, lives near above on adjoining land owned by James Oates [?].  Is a cousin of Lena.  Has two children named John & Sarah [  ?  ] grown.  John has been working on Mrs. Hendricks place for $16.00 a month but is now sick and helpless.  Has no land, no crop growing.  Has a hog, a few chickens.  Is recommended by M. Moses.  Has three grandchildren, Margaret 19 years, Ann 17, Zilpha 15, all living with her and but two rooms in house.  Issued for self and two children for ten days.

 

August 16

 

239.  Elizabeth Parr, white widow, 48 years old.  Lives 8 miles from Chesterfield Court House on road running from Court House to Society Hill.  Has six children. Daughter Mary Boone 27 years, married.  Rebecca Parvis 25 years, married, Elizabeth 22 years, Samuel 18 years, William 10 years, Eliza 7.  Sam works in farm .  Has 40 acres, 5 or 6 planted in corn and peas.  Has one cow and two yearlings.  Has 8 hogs.  Is recommended by J. P. [?] Harrell, Geo. W. McIver, W. L. Reid, R. J. Powell and others of Cheraw. Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for herself and three children for ten days.

 

240.  Rebecca McQuaig, white widow, 33 years old.  Lives near her father Jeremiah Youngs, Case 199 this Book.  Has five children under 12.  Lives on James Jones place.  Has a garden.  Has about 2 acres of corn, 1 acre of cotton.  Has one yearling cow.  Has four Hogs, 12 chickens.  Is recommended by same parties as Elizabeth Lizenbie, Case 232, this Book.  Has free ticket on R. R. Issued for ten days to self and children.

 

241.  Hannah Pipkin, white widow, 26 years old.  Has three children under 8.  Lives 4 miles from Florence on Darlington road on a place rented by her mother Sarah Madelin from Joe McCown.  Mother has 500 acres in corn & cotton, engages 5 or 6 freedmen.  Mother married to Marc Madelin who owns two horses, some hogs and chickens.  Hannah lives in a different house from that occupied by her mother and has nothing of her own.  Is recommended by Doctor Wm. A. Washington of Florence.  Issued for three days to self & children.  {Refused to issue anything more.}

 

242. Annie Amison, white widow, 35 years old.  Has five children under 14.  Lives on Newman Swamp 16 miles distant on road running from Timmonsville to Field’s Bridge over Lynch’s Creek.  Lives on Richard Smith’s Estate land.  Has some fifteen acres planted in corn, cotton & potatoes.  Has a mare & colt three months old.  Has 3 hogs.  Her son John 13 years helps to work the crop.  Is recommended by J. E. Byrd, M.D. & A. S. Rogers of Timmonsville.  Issued for three days. Richard Smith was her brother in law.  {Hester Fields applied for a ration on Aug. 31st on certificate of A. N. Stuckey and was refused because she is a relative of Huggins Magistrate of Darlington who is able to and should do something for her.  She in consequence reported this Mrs. Amison as also a cousin of Huggins and the issue to her will be discontinued.}

 

243.  Esther Hudson, white, unmarried 36 years old.  Lives about 1 mile from above Amison on Jesse Keith’s land.  Has about 2 acres planted in potatoes etc.  Has five children.  One son William of 17, afflicted with dropsy. One daughter Elizabeth 15, rest under 13.  Mother, Mary Hudson  60 years old lives with her.  Esther was never married.  The father of her children Edward Lafferty died six years ago.  Is recommended by Doctor Byrd & A. S. Rogers of Timmonsville.  Has no stock of any kind.  Issued for five days.

 

August 17

 

244.  Billoe Brockington, freedwoman, 27 years old.  Deformed & helpless, has never walked a step and cannot use her hands.  Fathers name John working with S. B. McBride who rents a plantation from Mr. Allston.  Lives with her father on said place on Louders lake, 8 miles distant on Cashway Ferry road.  John has a wife and seven other children under 10 years.  Is recommended by S. B. McBride.  Issued to Billoe for ten (10) days.

 

245. Sarah Teal, white widow, 28 years old.  Has three children under 9 years.  Lives 5 or 6 miles from Cheraw on road running to Camden from that place.  Lives with her sister Dolly Currie who has about 200 acres, but only 5 or 6 acres planted in corn, peas etc.  Dolly has one small child.  Has 2 cows, 6 hogs, 6 chickens.  No one to help to work the place.  Sarah is recommended by W. L. J. Reid of Cheraw.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for five days.

 

246.  Effie Tranthane [Frantham?], white widow, 58 years old.  Has a nephew under 13, disabled by accident.  Lives about 9 miles from Cheraw near above mentioned Sarah Teal.  Has 86 acres.  5 or 6 acres planted in corn, potatoes, peas.  Has one ox.  One cow & calf, 3 hogs, 4 chickens.  Is recommended by Mr. Reid as above.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for five days.

 

247. Sarah Clark, white, husband John serving in U. S. service in Colorado Territory.  Sarah is 36 years old.  Has two children under 12.  Lives in Cheraw, Chesterfield on her mother’s, Ellen Lisle’s, lot.  Has a small garden.  Has no stock. Is recommended by J. P. Harrall, W. L J. Reid and others of Cheraw.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for five days.

 

248. Martha Clark, white, widow, 33 years old.  Is sister to above, lives on same lot with her mother Ellen Lisle.  Has one child under 11 years, and one nephew under 12.  Has a small garden.  Has 3 or 4 chickens.  No other stock.  Is recommended by same [persons?] as above.  Her niece Francis Lanaford afflicted with dropsy lives with her.  Has free ticket on R. R. Issued for five days to Martha, Francis & two children.

 

249.  Nancy Hatchel, white widow, 45 years old.  Has six children, one son Andrew 14 years, rest under 12.  Lives near New Effingham.  Has 30 acres in corn, potatoes, peas & 1 acre of cotton.  Has one ox, one cow, 4 hogs, 17 chickens.  Is recommended by A. McLaughin magistrate, George Hall, D. L. McCarthy and others of Effingham.  Is refused as having sufficient for support.

 

250.  William Watson, white, is 66 years old.  Wife’s name Elizabeth 55 years.  Has one daughter Harriet Cook, see Case 190 this Book.  Lives with her.  Is recommended by G. W. Duvall of Chesterfield, between Society Hill and Cheraw.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for himself and wife for seven (7) days.

 

251.  Elizabeth Roundtree, white, is 43 years old.  Has three children under 10.  Has never married.  Declines giving the name of the father of her children.  Lives within two miles of Sarah Hicks, case 170 this Book, her sister on Mr. James Carter’s place who lets her have a small potato patch and garden.  Has 2 hogs, 3 chickens.  Is recommended by Z. Powe brother in law of Duvall above mentioned.  Has free ticket on R. R.  Issued for self and children for seven days.

 

August 18

 

252.  Eliza Elmore, white widow, 30 years old.  Has three children under 7.  Lives on other side of Boggy Gully 15 miles distant on Camden road to DuBose bridge over Lynch’s creek.  Lives on land of Mrs. David Scott, her mother in law, who has 75 acres with one freedwoman working crop.  Eliza has 3 hogs, 14 or 15 chickens.  Mrs. Scott has 2 cows & 4 hogs.  Eliza is recommended by A. N. Stuckey, Chairman of Board of Poor for Darlington Dist.  Issued for herself and three children for seven (7) days.

 

253.  Martha Harrall, white widow, 35 years old. Has four children under 7.  Lives near above mentioned Eliza, on land of her brother’s James Fields who rents a large place from Estate of his mother in law Mrs. Northcote and works it with two boys, sons of Mrs. Northcote.  Martha has a few chickens, no crop or stock.  Brother does nothing is for her.  Is recommended by A. N. Stuckey as above.  Issued for seven (7) days.

 

254. Tina Flynn, freedwoman, 70 years old.  Lives on Hilliard Ferrell’s place, one mile from Florence on Cheraw & Darlington R. R.  Is feeble & helpless.  Certificate signed by Mrs. E. A. Hart of Darlington.  Issued for seven (7) days.
